Prayer Shawl (Tallit, Tallis)
This prayer shawl, also from the Jewish tradition, is worn during morning worship, during a Torah service, on Yom Kippur, and on other holidays. The commandment regarding the Tallit speaks of the Tzitzit, or specially tied fringes on the corner, and that fibers such as wool and linen should not be mixed. Other than these, apart from tradition, there are no specifications as to color, fiber/material, or pattern.
Tallit are often given on special occasions, such as weddings, bar or bat mitzvahs, or trips to Israel. They are often given by parents to children, children to parents, students to teachers, or to celebrate other special relationships in life.
